How an IT Professional in Bengaluru Can Earn Extra Income by Spending a Few Hours on YouTube

You have something most people starting a channel do not: production experience. You have debugged something at two in the morning, watched a deployment fail in a way no tutorial predicted, and learned the difference between how a system is documented and how it actually behaves.
That is genuinely scarce content. Tutorials are commoditised and AI writes them adequately. Accounts of what actually broke are not.
But before any of that is useful, there is a question specific to Indian IT that you need to answer first, and it is not the one most articles start with.
Check your contract before you check your camera
Indian IT has the strictest secondary-work culture of any sector in the country, and the position in 2026 is more specific than the 2022 headlines suggested.
Reporting through 2026 indicates a genuine split. Swiggy, Tech Mahindra, Cred, DBS Tech, Thoughtworks and Razorpay have formal policies permitting outside work with disclosure and approval, and most product startups are flexible. The IT services sector, including TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, HCL, Capgemini and Accenture, generally prohibits it, and the India offices of the large US technology firms typically do too.
Detection has also become considerably more capable. Background verification agencies now look for multiple UAN entries covering the same period, and consulting income where a client has deducted TDS under section 194J appears in your Form 26AS, which a future employer can see. Consequences range from a warning to termination for cause, with a permanent note on your background verification record.
Now the distinction that matters, and almost nobody makes it.
A YouTube channel is not dual employment. There is no second employer, no second UAN and no second provident fund contribution. Most of what the 2022 firings concerned was engineers holding two full-time jobs simultaneously, sometimes at competing firms. That is a different thing from publishing videos.
What you still need to check is your own contract, because IT services agreements commonly bar secondary work or require written consent in broad terms that may cover more than employment. Three hard lines exist regardless of what your contract says: never anything that competes with your employer, never company resources or time, and never client, proprietary or confidential material.
And note where the risk actually concentrates. The channel itself is usually the safe part. Consulting clients acquired through the channel is where it becomes traceable, because that income shows up in your tax records.
I am not a lawyer, and this is a prompt to read your appointment letter rather than advice. It takes an evening and it is the only genuinely serious risk in this plan.
What to actually make
Given the above, the strongest material is the part of your knowledge that is not tied to your employer.
Concept and architecture explanations. Why a pattern exists, what it trades away, when it is wrong. Evergreen and steadily searched.
Tool workflows, including failures. How you actually use a tool in real work and where it does not hold up. Under-served, because vendor content never covers the second half.
Career and interview content. Bengaluru has the largest concentration of technology employment in India, and your peers are your audience. You know what the questions actually are because you were asked them.
Post-mortems, properly anonymised. The shape of a failure without the client, the system or the specifics. This is the most valuable category and the one requiring most care.
What I would avoid entirely is anything recognisable from your current work. The reputational risk is not worth the extra view count, and it is exactly what a conflict-of-interest clause is written for.
Personal channel or faceless?
Both work, and the choice is genuinely consequential here.
Faceless suits you if you would rather your employer not find the channel, which is a reasonable position given the contract question above. Screen recordings with a voiceover are entirely standard for technical content and nobody considers it a lesser format.
A personal channel converts far better into consulting, courses and job offers, because people hire people. If your goal is eventually to be known in your field, showing your face is a real advantage.
One caveat specific to your situation: a personal channel is discoverable by your employer within about a week. If your contract is restrictive, resolve that question before you appear on camera rather than after.
Five to eight hours a week, around a Bengaluru week
The commute is the constraint. Plan around it rather than pretending it is not there.
A weeknight, thirty minutes. Choose the topic. Only choosing, nothing else. This is the highest-leverage half hour of your week.
Saturday morning, three hours. Research and script while you are fresh.
Saturday afternoon or Sunday, two to three hours. Record, edit, thumbnail, publish.
One video a week is sufficient. Consistency matters far more than volume, and five good videos beat thirty rushed ones. Pick a cadence you can hold in a release week, not one you can hold in a quiet month.
Where the money actually comes from
Four routes, and for you they rank differently than for most creators.
Consulting and advisory. Almost certainly your largest line, and the fastest. Technical judgement commands real rates, and a channel is how people find you. Re-read the contract section before you take a client.
Courses and digital products. You have the material from work you have already done. High margin, slower to build.
Sponsorships. Developer tools spend genuinely well on channels with a defined technical audience, and they do so at smaller subscriber counts than in most categories.
AdSense. Technology sits near the top of advertising rates, and English content reaching US and European viewers earns at those markets’ rates rather than Indian ones. It will still be your smallest line for a long time. Monetisation typically takes one to six months with good execution, and the threshold rises to 8,000 watch hours for new applicants from 1 February 2027.
Nobody can promise you any of this. Most people who start do not continue.
Where to start this weekend
Take the last thing at work that surprised you, strip every identifying detail, and explain the general version in ten minutes.
You will find out quickly whether you enjoy this, and you will have practised explaining a technical idea clearly, which is a skill that pays inside your career as well as outside it.
Just read the contract first.

Common questions
Is running a YouTube channel considered moonlighting in India?
Generally no. Moonlighting usually means dual employment, with a second employer, a second UAN and a second provident fund contribution, none of which a channel creates. However, many IT services contracts restrict secondary work in broader terms or require written consent, so read your own appointment letter rather than assuming.
Can I make videos about my work projects?
Not about anything recognisable. Client work, proprietary systems and confidential material are off limits regardless of what your contract says about outside work. The general version of a technical problem, with every identifying detail removed, is usually fine and is often the more useful video anyway.
Which Indian IT companies allow side work?
Reporting through 2026 indicates Swiggy, Tech Mahindra, Cred, DBS Tech, Thoughtworks and Razorpay have formal policies permitting it with disclosure, while the IT services majors and the India offices of large US technology firms generally do not. Policies change, so confirm your employer's current position rather than relying on a list.
Should I show my face or run a faceless channel?
Faceless suits you if you would rather the channel stay separate from your employer, and screen recordings with a voiceover are standard for technical content. A personal channel converts far better into consulting and job offers. Note that a personal channel is discoverable by your employer quickly, so resolve the contract question first.
How do I fit this around a Bengaluru work week?
Five to eight hours, mostly at the weekend. Choose the topic on a weeknight in thirty minutes, research and script on Saturday morning, then record and publish across a second block. The commute is the real constraint, so build the schedule around it rather than around an ideal week.
